Lapo Chapé

‘The skin colour that defies the condition of slavery’

Description

Through personal accounts and historical analysis, Lapo Chapé explores how skin colour and mixed heritage continue to shape identity today, revisiting the colonial racial classification established by Médéric Louis Élie Moreau de Saint-Méry in 1797.

The term ‘Lapo Chapé’, which comes from Martinican Creole, means ‘the skin colour that escapes the condition of slavery’.

This documentary explores the themes of skin colour and mixed heritage from a fresh perspective, through a series of personal accounts that shed light on the invisible influences of history which have shaped our social representations and continue to challenge our own perceptions of identity to this day.
