The Legends of Paris - The era of emancipation (1855-1871)
Episode 4/4
Description
Exiled to Guernsey, Hugo rediscovers his taste for great novels. With the help of Juliette Drouet, he completes Les Misérables, while young artists struggle to make their mark in Paris.
Madame Bovary, Les Fleurs du Mal and Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe are all censored. Delacroix dies, leaving Baudelaire as an orphaned artist. The poet no longer has a place within the glitzy Paris redesigned by Haussmann. Allergic to modernization, he retreats into exile in Belgium, returning to France only at the hour of his death. Nadar turns photography into a new art form, drawing inspiration from Jules Verne's first futuristic novels... But war soon spells the end of Napoleon III. Hugo returns to France a hero. Together with Sand, Gautier and Dumas, they finally witness the triumph of Liberty and the Republic.
